🏆10 Most Common French Verbs
Today, we're gonna talk about the top 10 most lit verbs in French and how to slay them like a pro !
Verbs are the lifeblood of communication, so if you want to be the coolest cat in town, you gotta master them like a boss 😉
Whether you're a beginner or a boss babe, this guide is gonna make you the Beyoncé of French verbs 👑
So, are you ready to rock and roll?
Let's dive in and make some magic happen!
1. être — to be
je suis (“I am”)
tu es (“you [singular informal] are”)
il, elle, on est (“he, she, it is”)
nous sommes (“we are”)
vous êtes (“you [plural informal/singular formal] are”)
ils, elles sont (“they are”)
Example: Je suis devant le cinéma. (“I am in front of the movie theater.”)
Grammar tip:
“Être” is one of the two most important French verbs to learn when you’re learning French
2. avoir — to have
j’ai
tu as
il, elle, on a
nous avons
vous avez
ils, elles ont
Example: J’ai envie de manger une glace. Et toi ? (“I feel like [lit. have desire for] eating ice cream. What about you?”)
Grammar tip:
Like “être”, “avoir” is an essential French verb and has irregular conjugations. For the vast majority of French verbs conjugation, “avoir” serves as the auxiliary verb in the compound tenses and moods
3. faire — to make, to do
je fais
tu fais
il, elle, on fait
nous faisons
vous faites
ils, elles font
Example: Tu fais toujours de la danse ? (“Are you still practicing [lit. doing] dancing?”)
Grammar tip:
Unlike in English where the present tense has three different forms (the present simple, the present progressive, and the present emphatic), there is only one present tense in French. Le temps présent in French is used to express both momentary action and progressive action. So, “je fais le gâteau” could be translated as “I make the cake”, “I’m making the cake”, and “I do make the cake”
4. pouvoir — to be able to, can
je peux
tu peux
il, elle, on peut
nous pouvons
vous pouvez
ils, elles peuvent
Example: Tu peux me passer le café ? (“Can you pass the coffee to me?”)
5. dire — to say, to tell
je dis
tu dis
il, elle, on dit
nous disons
vous dites
ils, elles disent
Example: Je te dis que c’est vrai ! (“I am telling you that it’s true!”)
6. aller — to go
je vais
tu vas
il, elle, on va
nous allons
vous allez
ils, elles vont
Example: Tu vas à la fête ce soir ? (“Are you going to the party tonight?”)
Grammar tip:
Verbs whose auxiliary verb is “être” must show agreement of their past participles in gender (masculine or feminine — add e) and number (singular or plural — add s)
Example:
Masculine subject → Je suis allé.
Feminine subject → Je suis allée.
Masculine plural → Ils sont allés.
Feminine plural → Elles sont allées.
For a mixed group, always use the masculine form
Example:
Thomas et Catherine sont revenus. (Thomas and Catherine came back.)
7. voir — to see
je vois
tu vois
il, elle, on voit
nous voyons
vous voyez
ils, elles voient
Example: Tu vois où est la crêperie ? J’habite juste à côté. (“Do you know [lit. see] where the crêperie is? I live next to it.”)
8. savoir — to know
je sais
tu sais
il, elle, on sait
nous savons
vous savez
ils, elles savent
Example: Vous savez si la gare est loin ? (“Do you know if the station is far away?”)
9. vouloir — to want
je veux
tu veux
il, elle, on veut
nous voulons
vous voulez
ils, elles veulent
Example: Tu veux m’accompagner au concert ? (“Do you want to come along with me to the concert?”)
Grammar tip:
“Vouloir” can be used to express a want or a desire, or to politely request something. It can also be used to give strong commands or to willingly agree to something, amongst other uses
Desire: Je veux devenir astronaute ! (I want to become an astronaut!)
Polite request: Voulez-vous tenir ça pour moi ? (Would you please hold this for me?)
Strong command: Je veux qu’il finisse ses tâches avant de sortir. (I want him to finish his chores before he goes out.)
10. venir — to come
je viens
tu viens
il, elle, on vient
nous venons
vous venez
ils, elles viennent
Example: Ils viennent nous rendre visite le week-end prochain. (“They will come visit us next weekend.”)
💡The Language Tip you Should Know
Learning a new language can feel like trying to fit an elephant into a phone booth…
It's a huge challenge!
And let's be real, most of us have tried the "spray and pray" method of learning
You know, where you just read or listen to everything in the new language and hope for the best😂
Ain't nobody got time for that!
Now, don't get me wrong, immersing yourself in the language is essential
But we need to do better than just hoping and praying
Luckily, there are some pretty cool memory techniques that can help us out😉
I’m here to share one of my favorites: the Memory Palace mnemonic technique
This technique is like a language learning superhero
It helps you remember words and phrases at lightning speed, thanks to the power of "the primacy effect" and "the recency effect"
Basically, your brain is wired to remember things that you encounter first, last, and often
And with a Memory Palace, you can tap into that superpower like a boss💪
The best part?
Using memory techniques is actually fun! And the more you use them, the easier they get. It's like riding a bike, but instead of a bike, it's your brain, and instead of a helmet, you're wearing a crown
So, if you're ready to take your language learning to the next level, check out how to use a Memory Palace to boost your vocabulary !
PS: There are plenty of articles on the Internet to learn more about this (I just don't have enough space here to detail the method, the newsletter should be read in less than 5 minutes😉)
