FTC #22: Little stroll in Moret Sur Loing, "Futur Proche" & Why You Should Learn French ?

Il fait (très) chaud en ce moment à Paris.

Hier, on tournait autour des 30 degrés… L’occasion parfaite pour aller faire trempette.

It is (very) hot in Paris right now. Yesterday, we were hovering around 30 degrees... The perfect opportunity to go for a dip.

Problème :

Les piscines municipales parisiennes sont bondées, je n’ai pas encore de piscine olympique dans mon appartement, les piscines d’hôtels sont trop petites pour un grand gaillard comme moi et il faudra attendre 2025 pour se baigner dans la Seine.

Solution ?

Fuir le macadam pour se rapprocher des lacs et des rivières.

J’ai donc décidé de prendre ma serviette et mon maillot de bain pour aller faire bronzette à 1 heure de Paris… Un dimanche (je précise car ce détail aura toute son importance plus tard).

Problem: The public swimming pools in Paris are crowded, I don't have an Olympic-sized pool in my apartment yet, hotel pools are too small for a big guy like me, and we'll have to wait until 2025 to swim in the Seine. Solution? Escape the pavement and get closer to lakes and rivers. So, I've decided to grab my towel and swimsuit to go sunbathe just an hour away from Paris... on a Sunday (I mention this detail because it will be very important later on).

Destination Moret Sur Loing.

C’est un village médiéval en bordure de la Forêt de Fontainebleau.

En arrivant sur place, on découvre des petites rues où tout le monde se balade à pied, des maisons à colombage, une jolie rivière… Le Loing (une charmante rivière au sud de Paris, qui serpente au milieu de paysages et de villages qui ont inspiré les impressionnistes)

Destination: Moret-sur-Loing. It's a medieval village on the edge of the Fontainebleau Forest. Upon arrival, you'll discover narrow streets where everyone strolls on foot, half-timbered houses, and a beautiful river... the Loing (a charming river south of Paris, meandering through landscapes and villages that inspired the Impressionists).

Petit point culture :

Le nom de Moret-sur-Loing est inséparable de celui d’Alfred Sisley (1839-1899).

Ce peintre, considéré comme le plus grand paysagiste impressionniste a vécu vingt ans à Moret-sur-Loing.

Captant les changements de lumière, les reflets sur le Loing et la beauté des paysages, ses compositions restent parmi les plus grands chefs-d’œuvre impressionnistes et sont accrochées dans les plus prestigieux musées du monde.

Fun fact: The name of Moret-sur-Loing is inseparable from that of Alfred Sisley (1839-1899). This painter, considered the greatest Impressionist landscape artist, lived in Moret-sur-Loing for twenty years. Capturing the changes of light, the reflections on the Loing, and the beauty of the landscapes, his compositions remain among the greatest masterpieces of Impressionism and are displayed in the most prestigious museums around the world.

Bref, revenons à Moret Sur Loing.

L’architecture est tellement particulière qu’on a vraiment une sensation de dépaysement.

A l’entrée du village, on trouve par exemple des portes du 12ème siècle.

Anyway, let's get back to Moret-sur-Loing. The architecture is so unique that you truly feel transported to another place. At the entrance of the village, for example, you can find 12th-century doors.

Mais la rivière reste quand même l’atout séduction de Moret sur Loing.

La baignade est (en théorie) interdite mais comme Le Loing est très peu profond au niveau du village, beaucoup de gens bravent l’interdiction par beau temps et se baignent.

Vous vous demandez si j’ai respecté la loi ?

But the river remains the main attraction of Moret-sur-Loing. Swimming is theoretically forbidden, but since the Loing is very shallow in the village, many people defy the ban in good weather and go for a swim. You're probably wondering if I respected the law? The answer is in the photo.

Parlons maintenant des petites galères que j’ai eues (pour que vous puissiez les éviter)

En tant que bon parisien, je suis habitué à ce que tout soit ouvert 24/7 (oui, même le dimanche s’il vous plait)

Malheureusement, ce n’est pas le cas partout en France.

Je suis donc arrivé à Moret Sur Loing aux alentours de 15h sans avoir pris de petit-déjeuner.

Après une petite marche d’une demie heure, j’avais faim. Très faim.

Mais impossible de trouver un endroit pour se ravitailler…

Heureusement, un petit bistrot sur la place du village restait ouvert toute la journée pour hydrater tous ces visiteurs du dimanche.

Au menu : de la bière, des cocktails, des crêpes ET des plateaux de charcuterie.

Now let's talk about the little challenges I encountered (so you can avoid them). As a true Parisian, I'm used to everything being open 24/7 (yes, even on Sundays). Unfortunately, that's not the case everywhere in France. So, I arrived in Moret-sur-Loing around 3 pm without having had breakfast. After a short walk of half an hour, I was hungry. Very hungry. But I couldn't find a place to refuel... Luckily, a small bistro on the village square remained open all day to quench the thirst of all those Sunday visitors. On the menu: beer, cocktails, crepes, AND charcuterie platters.

**Oui, j’ai bien mangé**/ *Yes, I ate well.*

Tout est bien qui finit bien.

Si vous venez à Paris, laissez vous tenter.

Futur proche

Dans ma petite histoire juste au-dessus, j’ai écrit cette phrase :

“L’occasion parfaite pour aller faire trempette”

J’ai utilisé le verbe ALLER + un verbe à l’infinitif pour exprimer une action qui va se dérouler dans un avenir très proche du présent.

Oui, on n’utilise pas toujours le futur simple (temps) pour parler du futur.

In my little story just above, I wrote this sentence: “L’occasion parfaite pour aller faire trempette”. I used the verb ALLER + an infinitive verb to express an action that will take place in the very near future from the present. Yes, we don't always use the futur simple (future tense) to talk about the future.

Voici ce que tu dois retenir :

On emploie le futur proche en français dans les cas suivants :
Événement immédiat ou qui va avoir lieu dans un futur proche
Action planifiée dans un futur proche, fait présenté comme certain
On forme le futur proche avec le verbe ALLER au présent suivi de l’infinitif.

Exemple : Je vais étudier / nous allons manger

The "futur proche" (near future) is used in French in the following cases: Immediate or upcoming event in the near future/ Planned action in the near future, presented as certain. The "futur proche" is formed with the verb ALLER in the present tense followed by the infinitive. Example: Je vais étudier / Nous allons manger (I am going to study / We are going to eat).
