Lorsque l'on se lance dans l'apprentissage d'une nouvelle langue, comme le français, l'accent est souvent mis sur la grammaire, le vocabulaire et la prononciation.
Pourtant, un élément tout aussi important est parfois négligé : notre état d'esprit.
En effet, l'état d'esprit joue un rôle crucial dans l'apprentissage des langues.
Selon Carol Dweck, une célèbre psychologue, il existe deux types d'états d'esprit :
“L'état d'esprit fixe” et “l'état d'esprit de croissance” (Growth and Fixed Mindsets).
Avec un état d'esprit fixe, nous nous limitons par des croyances telles que “c'est trop difficile” ou “je suis trop vieux pour apprendre”…
À l'opposé, “l'état d'esprit de croissance” nous permet de voir les défis et les erreurs comme des opportunités d'apprendre et de progresser.
When we embark on learning a new language, like French, the focus is often placed on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. However, an equally important element is sometimes overlooked: our mindset. Indeed, mindset plays a crucial role in language learning. According to Carol Dweck, a renowned psychologist, there are two types of mindsets: “Fixed Mindset” and “Growth Mindset.” With a fixed mindset, we limit ourselves with beliefs such as “it’s too difficult” or “I am too old to learn.” In contrast, a “growth mindset” allows us to see challenges and mistakes as opportunities to learn and progress.
Prenons l'exemple d’un éléphant dans un cirque.
Il n’est pas retenu par de solides chaînes, mais simplement par une corde attachée à un piquet de bois.
Malgré sa grande force, l'éléphant ne tente pas de s'échapper.
Pourquoi ?
Parce qu'il a été conditionné dès son plus jeune âge à croire qu'il ne peut pas se libérer.
Cette corde, qui était suffisante pour le retenir lorsqu'il était jeune et plus faible, l'a amené à croire qu'il ne pourrait jamais s'échapper.
Take the example of an elephant in a circus. It is not held back by strong chains but merely by a rope tied to a wooden stake. Despite its great strength, the elephant does not attempt to escape. Why? Because it has been conditioned from a young age to believe that it cannot free itself. This rope, which was sufficient to hold it back when it was young and weaker, led it to believe that it could never escape.
Tout comme l'éléphant, nos expériences passées, la peur de l'échec, ou le jugement des autres peuvent nous empêcher de réaliser notre plein potentiel, particulièrement dans l'apprentissage du français.
Pour briser ces barrières mentales, il est très important de prendre conscience de leur existence et de les “challenger”.
Par exemple, si l'idée de parler français vous intimide, rejoignez un groupe de conversation.
Si vous avez peur de faire des fautes en écrivant, commencez à rédiger de petites histoires en français.
Surmonter nos barrières mentales exige de les identifier et de les affronter.
En adoptant un “état d'esprit de croissance” et en nous impliquant dans des activités qui défient nos peurs, nous pouvons débloquer notre plein potentiel et améliorer notre apprentissage du français.

Just like the elephant, our past experiences, fear of failure, or the judgment of others can prevent us from realizing our full potential, particularly in learning French. To break these mental barriers, it is very important to become aware of their existence and to challenge them. For example, if the idea of speaking French intimidates you, join a conversation group. If you are afraid of making mistakes in writing, start by writing small stories in French. Overcoming our mental barriers requires identifying and confronting them. By adopting a “growth mindset” and engaging in activities that challenge our fears, we can unlock our full potential and improve our learning of French. See you next week 😀
