I just read the article about Duolingo and I totally agree. I have been utilizing Duolingo for well over two years now. I was actually able to understand 95% of what you wrote in French, which makes me very happy. However, I still am not comfortable to speak in French and do not often understand spoken French. I have t been able to master thinking in French. There is always a time lapse in trying to understand what was said and then I’ve already missed what comes next. At 70 years old, I attribute this to just being too old to get faster at comprehending what was said.
J'adore Duolingo. C'est extrêmement motivant et amusant. Mais tu as raison, Duolingo seul ne suffit pas pour apprendre une langue. Mais pour créer une base sur laquelle on peut construire, c'est suffisant.

Je l'ai trouvé utile pour me familiariser avec ces nouvelles langues avant d'y arriver. Mais tu as raison, il ne m'a pas très bien préparé pour bavarder avec les gens locaux, ni pour apprendre la grammaire. Je trouve tes podcasts et tes Newsletters bien utiles pour apprendre le français plus profondément, ainsi que pour me préparer à rendre visite chez amis francophones en France et en Suisse. I’ll write in English for simplicity (but I am from Sweden). I’ve been studying French with Duolingo for almost a year (3 weeks left). I only started as a fun little hobby because I’m going to Paris for the Olympics and wanted a project during the 1,5 years leading up to the trip. I didn’t know if I would be able to learn much at all and I just thought that if I could read some signs and menus and stuff it would be nice.
But after almost 1 year of studying about 30 minutes a day - sometimes 2 minutes while on busy business trips or sometimes 2 hours when I’ve had a lot of time and inspiration - I’m finishing up on level A2. No, I don’t speak well and yes I have a harder time listening sometimes and my writing isn’t perfect. But my reading is on some B-level, I have read shorter easier books and I’ve bought magazines where I understand enough. I watch Lupin with French subtitles and get enough. I listen to your podcast for B1/B2 and if I read the transcripts I understand most of it.
So ok, I’ve done a lot more than just Duolingo and I’ve done a lot of Duolingo. But if you add on these things - reading books and magazines, watching series and films (e.g. Aristocats on Disney+ with French sound or other things you already have a knowledge about), listening to music and podcast etc. I think you can come a long way. Now I’m also starting to speak with a French friend so I can practice that part which is really weak in comparison.
If your goal is to speak then yes, be wary. And of course, after coming this far and realizing that for me it was much easier than anticipated, of course I want to speak too, not only read menus. But I really do think it’s amazing what Duolingo has made happen for me in only 1 year, even though not everything happened in the app. Duolingo stimulated me to try all those other ways of learning as well and the gamification and the streak has pushed me to study every day. In 3 weeks I’m taking a formal test to get a real grade in French, at the equivalent of A2 in the Swedish education system, hopefully I’ll pass the test!
J'ai étudié le français à l'université il y a 45 ans (plusieurs cours). J'utilise Duo depuis 3.5 années et j'ai complété le cours l'année dernière. Duo a ajouté des leçons et je continue à apprendre beaucoup de nouveau vocabulaire et phrases idiomatiques. Je l'ai trouvé comme un très bonne fondation - plus solide que mes cours à l'université où on n'a pas beaucoup étudié même le subjonctif. Maintenant, j'adore les podcasts, vidéos, conversations, etc. qu'on peut trouver à Internet - c'est merveilleux! Et merci, Carlito, pour votre podcast - une autre bonne ressource! Bien fait :)

J'ai utilisé duolingo dans une autre apprentissage que le français. Après deux ans avec présence quotidienne j'avais pas avancé. Cela c'est mon expérience.

Je pense que Duolingo peut aider à apprendre la grammaire. J’utilise cette application pour revoir tout que j’apprends dans le cours de français.
